Fans of Nick Cave and Tom Waits will certainly find themselves drawn to Silver Darling—a Sacramento-based trio chockfull of vocal dramatics, Southern Gothic lyrics, and a healthy dose of weirdness thrown in for good measure. Unfortunately, frontman and primary songwriter Kevin Lee lacks the presence of Cave and Waits, and the band’s unique folk/soul/moody indie rock sound isn’t enough to make up for it. There are a few good songs, specifically the haunting whisper-shouted “Hanging Rest”, but overall Silver Darling’s debut album is nothing earth-shattering. If anything, the band is trying too hard to be earth-shattering and as a result comes up short. Your Ghost Fits My Skin is certainly one of the more unique records to come out this year, but it’s not particularly memorable.
