Not surprising given his moniker, DJ Food fancies tunes with gastronomical themes. As such, he flipped when he found the long-lost track by the Dragons, “Food for My Soul”, intending to use it on a surf movie soundtrack he was developing. A little research and he was in touch with this old ‘60s band made up mainly of members of the Beach Boys backing band. They still had the masters for BFI, recorded close to 40 years ago, and passed on by their label at the time. Swirling organs, deep textures, and a soulful jazziness render these tunes very much of their era (late ‘60s West Coast experimental pop) and yet also enable them to sound surprisingly contemporary and quite at home on an adventurous label like Ninja Tune. You’ll hear elements of the Doors and Steely Dan. At times, the Dragons evoke a very trippy Booker T. and the MGs. BFI will please fans of ‘60s pop, instrumental post-rock, jazzy rock, and electronic music equally. A rare lost gem thankfully resurrected, perfect for the headphones and the stereo stack.
