Mix the Killers, At the Drive In, The Strokes, and a pinch or two of power punk and you have yourself The Lovekill, a lovely little outfit from Cleveland. As Drew Carey said, Cleveland rocks! And The Lovekill does just that with “Palms and Gin”, a rowdy romp that ignites the album into fourth gear within seconds. The song clocks in under three minutes, but you’d be hard pressed to find a song packaging more oomph or urgency. The same can be said for “The Refrain of the Am”, although this one is a tad more winding and tamer. There’s almost a glam rock feeling to some of these songs, as lead singer Chris Rager swaggers through the fine “Sleepover”. Fans of The Bangkok Five would enjoy these songs, although most have a gritty, seedier feeling to them judging by “Heart Wires”. The title track delves into similar musical terrain with some punk-ish riffs and some interesting drum fills but “Complicated Sighs” is a better, polished effort. The last couple of songs seem tired, the lone exception being the garage-y “Nothing Yet” that evolves into something greater and bigger.
