After the minimal buzz surrounding the British gals in the Pipettes died down the U.S. promptly forgot about the girl-group-worshipping girl-group. “Your Kisses Are Wasted on Me” was one of the better tracks on their debut, We Are the Pipettes; and strangely, sounds entirely different now than it did buried in the middle of the album last year. Hear “Your Kisses Are Wasted on Me” today and you may think of Lily Allen mixed up with Gwen Stefani and Avril Lavigne. The three tracks that come from the album on this U.S.-only EP don’t have much of the wink in the band’s trademark winking homage, but it doesn’t really matter. “I Love You” is still sweet, filled out with saccharine strings, and too short. Though you sometimes wish the band was more subversion and less act, in the end it’s better for the kids if they’re listening to this stuff than “Girlfriend”, but the Pipette’s music still feels pop-transient. We may not still be talking about the Pipettes come years’ end, but when you next hear their harmonic strains you probably won’t mind.
