The School

Let It Slip

(Elefant; US: Unavailable; UK: 18 Jun 2008)

On the cover of the debut EP by the School, you can see singer/songwriter Liz Hunt laying on her floor amidst a pile of LPs that include Big Star, Television, and Paul McCartney. What’s interesting, though, is how the School’s music sounds nothing like this, instead coming off as some sweet indie-pop distillation not too far removed from Belle & Sebastian. The opening title track comes off as some great Pipettes B-side, replete with “ooh-bah-bah” vocal coos and a bright melody, while the sweet, nostalgia-inducing “Shoulder” winds up being a pleasant little tale of love and friendship. If there’s any major fault with the School, it’s that their sound never rises above their obvious influences, but their carefree sense of fun ultimately renders such criticism moot: it’s not going to change your life, but Let it Slip is still one helluva good time.
