Scotland, home of the Loch Ness Monster and the deep fried Mars bar, is also a wellspring of wonderfully diverse, melancholy, folk-based music. As a power trio from Edinburgh, the Tourettes are into everything from Bob Marley to Blind Melon, from roots to electronics. However, their debut four-track EP sees them focusing on formulating a response to ‘90s post-grunge, Sublime, and the pirate resurgence. “The Pirate Song” is absolutely essential for any Jack Sparrows fan, detailing the exploits of a vengeful captain over a tasty bassline and a fondly familiar alternative lead. “Cowboy Horrorshow” plays out an homage to late ‘60s progressive and Mars Volta jams which is totally solid and interesting instrumentally, but the vocals are a little lost in the mix. All in all, Good Evening Everybody is a fine introduction and a fitting tribute to their influences, showcasing their ability to rawk out like it’s 1999, but they need to exude a little more transcendence in their form if they’re going to make a impression on this flavor of the week landscape.
