With a volume per year since 1996, Future Sounds of Jazz is quite possibly the longest-running electronica compilation series ever. That’s testament to the immaculate taste of compiler Michael Reinboth, and to the consistent quality of his Compost label’s output. Volume 11 is no black eye on the series, either. However, since drum’n'bass went by the wayside, it’s unclear as to exactly what the future sound of jazz is. The orchestrated post-trip-hop of Joash’s “Salome” sounds like a good answer, as does the moody techno of The Invisible Session’s “‘Till the End”, the collection’s sole vocal track. But the handful of nondescript progressive house tracks ain’t where it’s at, and disco rehash like Blackjoy’s “Moustache” isn’t even in the vicinity. Reinboth’s unearthing of 400 Blows’synth-soul “Movin” from 1985 is a rare misstep, though retro completists will love it. As usual, you’ll find several exclusive cuts. All in all, Future Sounds of Jazz Vol. 11 sounds a lot like 2007.
