Globalista Radio: Sensual Sonores

(Mulatta; US: 26 Sep 2006; UK: Available as import)

This compilation features “Ethno Dance/Lounge Culture music” from New York City nightclubs. Sensual electronic effects bathe the dozen recordings. These beats accent a multitude of international styles: Brazilian Samba, West African funk, East European Gypsy and others. The sonic global landscape becomes a dance floor where every place is home and reminds you of somewhere else at the same time. Featured artists and songs include the Indian pop diva Shakti with an a capella version of the sexy “Do the Thang Thang”, the Japanese Bliki Circus imitating a blowsy, two-bit carnival on “Himatsuri” and the elegant French chanteuse Elodie O on the fragile “L’Attente”. Although the songs are mixed by several different individuals, the mixers share a concern with keeping things smooth and the rhythms always bouncing. These selections are meant to be played for a live audience. Each one has the power to turn an East Village Apple bar into the happening place in the universe to be.

Rating:

Steven Horowitz has a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Iowa, where he continues to teach a three-credit online course on "Rock and Roll in America". He has written for many different popular and academic publications including American Music, Paste and the Icon. Horowitz is a firm believer in Paul Goodman's neofunctional perspective on culture and that Sam Cooke was right, a change is gonna come.
