In the past couple of years, a number of enormously influential artists have sprung from the Research Triangle area of North Carolina, including Whiskeytown (alternative country), The Squirrel Nut Zippers (swing), and Ben Folds Five (piano pop). The eclectic nature of the Chapel Hill/Raleigh/Durham music scene is beginning to echo the rich musical environment of Austin. This eclecticism is captured in this new compilation of songs donated by artists from the region to benefit Chatham County (NC) Family Violence and Rape Crisis Services. Highlights include an incendiary live version of the Squirrel Nut Zippers’ “I’ve Found A New Baby,” the raging honky-tonk of Two Dollar Pistols’ “If Broken Hearts Were Gold”, the lo-fi pop of Portastatic’s “Hurricane Warning”, and Whiskeytown’s “Me And My Ticket.”
