Cool concept, no doubt about it. Shrewdly recognizing the parallels between early hip-hop and the recent dance underground, Jive has formed a new imprint dedicated to the new sounds of the street and the club. Mining a smattering of Jive’s classic sides, some of today’s hottest artists and producers twist the knobs in reinterpreting a number of hip-hop and R&B classics. My only gripe is that the remixers didn’t dig a bit deeper in the Jive back catalog. I’m the biggest Stone Roses fan around, but do we really need two versions of “Fool’s Gold.”

There’s a real Tribe Called Quest fixation on this disc as well—five of the 14 cuts being retakes on this seminal group. None of this really lessens the overall appeal of the record. Norman Cook’s (a.k.a. Fatboy Slim) mix of “I Left My Wallet in El Segundo” is a real tropical treat, while the Freestylers concoct a rowdy party mix of “(It’s All in Mr.) Magic’s Wand.” Elsewhere, old school tracks from Whodini, Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince, Kool Moe Dee, and the aforementioned Tribe Called Quest meet the new electro twiddling of the likes of Aphrodite, Doc Martin, and Rabbit in the Moon.
