It’s become popular sport in the press, especially in England, to bash Paul Weller for being the patron saint of Britpop. What’s missing in this written barrage is the acknowledgement that Weller has written an entire catalog of memorable songs—remember The Jam. He has also greatly influenced a host of brilliant ‘90s bands, including Oasis, Blur, and The Stone Roses, who originally went by the name English Rose in honor of an old Jam song. Covering his solo, post-Style Council career, Modern Classics includes most of the 1990s Weller essentials, including “Sunflower,” “The Changingman,” and “Wild Wood.” Weller’s supple, buttery, blue eyed soul vocals are in fine form on one of the 1990s’ best songs, “Broken Stones.”
