The latest collabo between Yea Big and Kid Static “Eatchyo Samwich” is a marked shift away from the current state of gangster rap and gilded thuggery. A track aimed at connecting with people on the dancefloor rather than on the corner, the casual, tattering hi-hats and uppercut bass thumps serve as an undeniable call to get your groove on, while the dadaist lyrics about mayonnaise and BLTs act as a playful reminder that hip-hop wasn’t always about selling rocks and representing your hood. But wrapped up in the seemingly nonsensical lines are a flurry of double entendres and random overt sexual references (“Grey Poupon, honey mustard / Spreading toppings like legs make it disgusting / Juice is dripping down your chin”). At its best, “Eatchyo Samwich” is a playful jam that’ll get your shoulders rocking; at its worst, a relatively inane sexual metaphor.
