When this promo arrived in the mail, I did a double take. Back in the spring of 1998, I read a review of this album in CMJ that, as a dyed-in-the-wool power pop fan, had me scouring local record stores for a copy. The skinny is that You Am I was unhappy with their former label and scooted over to another, who finally released #4 Record at the end of 1998. It was worth the wait. You Am I is one band that keeps the power in power pop—think early Who, early Jam, Sloan and a touch of the Rolling Stones, but with horns. Songs like “Junk” and “The Cream & The Crock” are typical of their power trio sound, which features crunchy guitar riffs ala Paul Weller and a furious rhythm section. Fans of this style of music should also check out You Am I’s stellar 1997 release Hourly, Daily.
