Fats DominoLive from Austin, TX(New West Records) US release date: 25 July 2006 by Steve HorowitzNo one embodies that New Orleans rock and roll sound more than Fats Domino. He had his first hits way back in the early ‘50s and remains a symbol of the city’s musical heritage today. Domino and his big Crescent City band play a top notch set on this live from Austin City Limits television series soundtrack disc, which was originally recorded back in October 1986. The Fat Man shakes the ivories and pleasantly vocalizes through his classic repertoire: great songs like “I’m Walkin’”, “My Blue Heaven”, “Ain’t That a Shame”, and of course “Blueberry Hill”. But this was no nostalgia trip for the audience, Domino kept the material fresh through his inspired performances. He’s backed by a great group that includes trumpet player Dave Bartholomew, who wrote many of Domino’s hits and who many consider the person most responsible for the original New Orleans sound of the post-World War II period.
