Chromophobia

(Kompakt)

US release date: 13 March 2007

UK release date: Available as import

by Gentry Boeckel

There’s been so much said about this record, I’m at a loss. It also doesn’t help that I don’t speak the lingo of techno. What I do know is that the 13 songs on Chromophobia are as colorful as the album artwork. Each song has a corresponding hue: “Shebang” is swampy green; “Chromophobia” is tubular gray; “Mr Decay” is LED red; and “The Verdict” is night brake-light yellow. The latter third of the record jumps ship almost entirely into electro-shoegazing terrain. “Beautiful Life” resembles a subtler Ulrich Schnauss song while “Xilo” has a Peter Hook-ish bass line at its core. Those looking for a little more evocative (obvious) emotion with their techno should definitely check out Boratto’s colorscapes.

As electronic music's edges bleed out all over the genre map, some sounds have been resurrected, others minimally revised, but the sum total shows a genre that, diffuse identity or not, continues to exert its pull on rock, pop, and the dancefloor.
