Elizabeth Taylor ... Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Oscar Winner: Taylor, one of the first women to work a total “de-glam” performance—complete with weight gain, vulgarity and aging—into a statuette. Sometimes the gimmickry works, sometimes it simply grates. Is that the character of Martha? Or is Taylor simply out of her element in a role that might have been better suited to someone like Bette Davis?
Mazur Winner:: It is impossible to split the dopplegangers of Ingmar Bergman’s masterwork Persona and both Ullmann (for her silence) and Andersson (for her explicit verbosity) deserve top honors this year. Of course, neither was nominated for the Oscar.
