Ramon and Jessica: Fly South

[23 February 2012]

By Jedd Beaudoin

Dina Maccabee (Ramon) and Jesse Olsen Bay (Jessica) return with 12 songs of sunshine and joy. The third overall release from the San Francisco-area duo reveals that quirk can have depth and lasting appeal as demonstrated through tracks such as “Waltz #3: In Which Coffee Becomes Wine” and “The Words You Know”, a beautiful ‘60s inflected meditation on what becomes of us when we sleep. “Maybe It’s the Times” is an amazing slice of bossa nova and the opening track, “At the Beginning of the End of the Empire”, is the perfect brand of off kilter. If the record seems at time to carry a sameness from track to track, no matter the stylistic shifts, that’s just part of the charm.
