Until a few years ago, the members of Velocette played in neo-mod combo Comet Gain. Leaving David Christian with that moniker, Sarah Bleach, Sam Pluck, and Jax Coombes departed for greener pastures, forming Velocette in 1997. Wise move, indeed. Sarah Bleach’s delightful singing—sometimes recalling Nina Persson (Cardigans) and Sarah Cracknell (Saint Etienne)—was buried in the background behind Christian’s faux, Mick Jones/Joe Strummer vocals for far too long. Gentle guitar jangle and relaxed keyboards support Bleach’s airy vocals in most places. Thankfully, the mood is occasionally interrupted by a bit of funk, lest the proceedings become too sleepy.
Velocette’s signature sound is merger of shoegazing with lounge pop, but in places they resurrect the ghost of Phil Spector and his wall-of-sound production of 60s girl groups (most notably on “Bitterscene”). This proves to be to the most promising path for Velocette’s future growth.
