Paper Man

Ryan Reynolds' Indie Superhero Warm-Up (trailer)

Technically, Reynolds is only an imaginary superhero seen by Jeff Daniels. Below is the trailer for the film directed by Kieran Mulroney and Michele Mulroney.

To address the elephant in the room, yes, the Paper Man trailer is rife with indie conventions that are somewhat cliché. The background music is vaguely familiar, if not decidedly hipster in style. Credit titles awkwardly shift in place, as if to shout, “This is an indie film! Notice the unfinished quality of it all!”

Now that that’s out of the way, it’s time to acknowledge the film’s potential. Although Paper Man has been working the festival circuit without gaining any crazy buzz, the cast alone should raise more than a few eyebrows from viewers. The film stars Jeff Daniels as a down on his luck novelist (nobody said it would be a stretch), who enjoys the company of an imaginary superhero, played by a bleach blonde Ryan Reynolds (the star of the forthcoming Green Lantern film). The story kicks into gear with the arrival of Emma Stone, playing a 17-year-old who just might be cool enough to change Daniels’ life.  Stone, having proven her chops in Superbad, continues to be a captivating actress, so it should be interesting how she fares in the land of the indie.

Paper Man is releasing 23 April in the US.
