Best Actress Rewind

1979

by Matt Mazur

1 September 2010

Oscar-watcher Matt Mazur dips into the history of this category and compares and contrasts the Academy's nominees with his own (frequently better) nominees!
Should have won... Bette Midler in The Rose

Oscar’s Nominees
Jill Clayburgh ... Starting Over
Sally Field ... Norma Rae
Jane Fonda ... The China Syndrome
Marsha Mason ... Chapter Two
Bette Midler The Rose

Mazur’s Nominees:

Jill Clayburgh … La Luna

Jane Fonda ... The China Syndrome

Diane Keaton … Manhattan

Bette Midler ... The Rose

Hanna Schygulla ... The Marriage of Maria Braun

Oscar Winner: The likable Field, who swept as an iconic, struggling union organizer.

Mazur Winner:: The prickly, raw Midler who channeled Janis Joplin’s tortured rock and roll essence and howled like a rainstorm in the live performance scenes in a way she has not attempted since. If ever there was a prime time to award Midler with an Oscar, this was it—and voters missed the boat despite her Best Actress nom for the terrible musical For the Boys in 1991.
