Superchunk: 17 September 2010 – Washington D.C.

Had you walked into the 9:30 Club on Friday night having never heard of Superchunk, you would have never guessed that the band on stage was only two nights into their first national tour in almost a decade. Showing no signs of rust, the band kicked off its 90-minute-long set with a triumphant rendition of “Throwing Things,” setting the tone for the remainder of the night. Throughout the set, frontman Mac McCaughan manically bounced around the stage and the audience responded in kind, pogoing wildly, bobbing heads and yelling along to nearly every song. Running through a career spanning set that touched on the recently-reissued No Pocky for Kitty, 1995’s underrated Here’s Where the Strings Come In and this year’s indispensible comeback LP, Majesty Shredding, the band played with proficiency, style and boundless energy. While fans of ’90s indie-rock would be forgiven for having reunion tour fatigue at this point, Superchunk served as a much-needed reminder that some songs really are worth revisiting.
