SXSW: Music Day 1: Twin Shadow, DOM, Yelawolf, Jack White…

Lots of great shows, surprises, and first appearances at SXSW today.

This afternoon, Jack White hopped out of his custom made Ice Cream Truck-Record Store-Recording Studio and treated the crowd to a short acoustic set of songs, which included Buddy Holly and the White Stripes song “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground”.

James Blake and Smith Westerns drew huge crowds for their sets and Bad Brains debuted for the first time to a massively excited crowd at Emo’s. Showcasing bands like Queens of Stone Age and Duran Duran churned out sets to capacity crowds, while on the other side of town, Foo Fighters brought yet another performance at the festival for the Woody Awards show.

Favorite show of the night? Low’s unbelievable performance at St. David’s Episcopal Church, as part of the Sub Pop Showcase. Subtle, powerful, and utterly transcendent.
