Underoath Debut Video for “Paper Lung”

Florida post-hardcore sextet Underoath recently released the video for “Paper Lung”, the second single from last year’s Ø (Disambiguation. The video, directed by Jonathan Desbiens, continues the trend of beautifully dark videos from the band, whose 2006 video for “Writing on the Walls” was nominated for a Grammy.

This latest video depicts an end of days scene, capturing the end of the world through ice, fire, and symbolic imagery. Desbiens’ use of the color red near the end of the video is particularly poignant and captures a real sense of panic, which coincides well with the final minute of the song. The director explained to Alternative Press that he “came up with this idea of apocalypse/end of times, which is a topic that not only concerns Christians, but every living human. This video tries to show an artistic, fantasist and very personal interpretation of the end of times within an universal approach.”

In 2007, Underoath lost their bid for Best Short Form Music Video at the Grammys to OK Go’s “Here it Goes Again”. However, “Paper Lung” is in many ways even more beautiful and frightening than “Writing on the Walls” and should be considered an early front-runner for best music video of 2011.
