Best Actress Rewind is back! Oscar-watcher Matt Mazur challenges the Academy's choices in his favorite category, comparing the Academy nominees with his own (frequently better) nominees!

Oscar Nominees:

Catherine Deneuve ... Indochine
Mary McDonnell ... Passion Fish
Michelle Pfeiffer ... Love Field
Susan Sarandon ... Lorenzo’s Oil
Emma Thompson ... Howard’s End

Mazur Nominees:

Sheila Florance … A Woman’s Tale

Sheryl Lee … Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me

Mary McDonnell … Passion Fish

Michelle Pfeiffer ... Batman Returns

Emma Thompson … Howard’s End

Oscar Winner: Emma Thompson, whose wit and quiet fury were memorable in this Merchant-Ivory film. Thompson was a solid winner.

Mazur Winner: I’ve always felt that Thompson’s fellow nominee Mary McDonnell gave a more interested, layered, and revelatory performance in John Sayles’ Passion Fish as a soap opera diva who returns to her Bayou roots following a traumatic accident that leaves her in a wheelchair. McDonnell brings a resilient spark to her character, a lost soul who must learn to cope with her new way of life in a new place. She’s funny, touching, and above all else, completely fierce.
