On October 2, Tori Amos will release her 13th studio album, the retrospective Gold Dust, which finds her re-imagining her own contemporary classics with the renowned Metropole Orchestra—and 20 years of experience behind her since her brilliant, confrontational debut record Little Earthquakes. Tori, by her own admission, has worn a lot of hats since then, and it is with the same spirit in which Tori approached Gold Dust that we will explore Amos’ prolific career with a patented Spotlight series coming very soon to PopMatters.
We have reserved this series for some of our favorite icons: Alfred Hitchcock, Radiohead, Joss Whedon, Sissy Spacek, Akira Kurosawa, Pedro Almodovar, and Ellen Burstyn. This time out we will be talking all things Tori, our first-ever “Performer Spotlight” on someone from the music world. We are thrilled to announce that we will be joined by Ms. Amos to guide us through this kaleidoscopic week-long look at her body of work. No surprise: she makes a fantastic guide.
If you’re in Europe, make sure to catch Tori performing live with the Metropole Orkest in these cities. If you’re not in Europe, tough luck. “I couldn’t fly half of Holland over here. I’m sorry, that’s a big check to write, you know what I’m saying?,” teased Amos during a lengthy chat with PopMatters (which will run throughout the entire series). “The reason I’m not doing it is because I couldn’t get a day rehearsal with an orchestra because of union rules and how much it would cost. I was going to do it, but I could only rehearse at soundcheck. And even the Dean at the Peabody told me, ‘Well, that’s music suicide.’ So I would be crying in the middle thinking people are watching us rehearse and we suck. I’d start running off—you’d see Tori Amos on YouTube running off from the Greek Theatre into the night, never to be seen again!”
