A few years ago, the name Jennifer Lawrence meant nothing to filmgoers. After being introduced to us in the forgettable The Burning Plain, she had a phenomenal breakthrough with the award winning Winter’s Bone which garnered her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Fast forward two years and she’s the star of two big budget franchises and might just be on her way to winning Best Actress for her brilliant work in Silver Linings Playbook. J.Law has captured the hearts of people all over the world with her sincere, charming, no-filter kind of personality and of course a talent beyond her young age. However even more remarkable is how she’s so effortlessly mastered the art of red carpet looks. Her evolution can be determined in how she went from looking like a girl next door with diamonds, to how now she’s the face of a legendary fashion house. Let’s take a look at J.Law’s wonderful fashion evolution in five looks.
At the 2011 Academy Awards - after having dazzled at the precursors in elaborate designs by Lanvin among others - Lawrence epitomized her bubbly all-American-girl persona by wearing a fiery Calvin Klein fitted dress. Part Baywatch, part Farrah, all understated sexiness, Lawrence seems to have opted for the comfortable look and you can imagine her gulping down beers and burgers after losing to juggernaut Natalie Portman that year. With this unexpected choice of designer, the young starlet proved she would become a force to be reckoned with in years to come.
For the premiere of The Hunger Games J.Law went all out in what might just be her greatest look to date. She chose a golden Prabal Gurung that pays homage to the character she plays in the film. Katniss Everdeen after all is often called “the girl who was on fire” and in this stunning dress, J.Law undeniably set sparks everywhere. See how easily she pulls off this elaborate look and how she trusts her dress so much that she opted not to even outdo it with unnecessary accessories. The only problem with this look is that she might never be able to top it off.
After her The Hunger Games red carpet tour (in which she opted for fiery looks, usually in reds, yellows and oranges that perfectly highlighted her blonde hair) J. Law surprised everyone when she showed up in a severe hair color at the Toronto International Film Festival where she attended the premiere of Silver Linings Playbook. For the occasion she opted for an impressionistic Dior dress that announced her contract as the new face of Miss Dior. This look might not be entirely successful, but it reminds us of how chameleonic the actress can be.
At the 2013 Golden Globe awards, J.Law officially became a Dior girl in this stunning creation that evoked both Madonna and Audrey Hepburn. The adorable actress confessed she wasn’t even sure what the color was (she knew it wasn’t red though…) and finally started using her darker hair as a superb addition to her look. The tiny belt and simple clutch were perfection.
At the 2013 BAFTAs, Lawrence went all out in a magnificent Dior creation. The simple silhouette and detailed embroidery allowed her to out-Dior Marion Cotillard herself, who attended the ceremony in a gorgeous structural creation from the house of Raf Simons. By the time of this awards show, we have seen the actress evolve from a natural beauty with flowing blonde hair and almost no makeup, to a full blown woman who is still simple but has become more aware of the part her dresses and makeup can play in the way we perceive her. With a new sleeker look, she hasn’t lost any of her joyful bubbliness, she has just convinced us that she can easily go from rom-com to femme fatale.
