Gail and Audrey

An Unexpected Love Story (video)

by Karen Zarker

3 May 2013

This is a charming clip of two accomplished women who have been together almost as long as my wife and I have. Yet still they debate introducing one another as ‘life partner’ or ‘wife’.

I like ‘wife’. My (not federally or state-recognized—and thus we are forced to declare ‘single’ on our tax forms) wife likes ‘wife’, too.

Still we wonder why anyone must have this debate over how people like us want to introduce our same-sex mates to others, and why such a love story as Gail and Audrey’s might be considered ‘unexpected’. It’s all wonderfully natural—and quite ordinary. Like marriage itself.
