Dying of the Light – “Monolithium” (video)

One day soon, Battletruck is going to find its redemption. The cult post-apocalyptic movie, filmed in New Zealand in 1982, demands a wider audience. It depicts a bleak and desperate vision of our future, and that’s something New Zealand industrial duo Dying of the Light plugged straight into for its video for “Monolithium”.

“Monolithium” is the title track from the band’s recently released (and James Plotkin mastered) four-song EP. The band’s members, Chris Rigby and Rangi Powick, were influenced by sci-fi films like Battletruck, The Road, and The Quiet Earth while filming their video, “guerrilla style”, on New Zealand’s central plateau and deep within a subterranean hydro-power station.

Shot and edited by Steve Hogg, with visual effects from Powick, the video is perfectly in keeping with Dying of the Light’s sound. The band is harsh, jarring, and monolithically heavy — and if comparisons are required, think crushing and doom-laden Godfleshian tones, by way of the metallic clangs and clamour of the Skeptics. The point being, Dying of the Light bring grim tidings, so if you’re on the lookout for a band to soundtrack the end of days, you can safely mark the Kiwi duo down.
