Mount Carmel - "Back on It" (stream) (Premiere)

by PopMatters Staff

10 February 2014

Columbus, OH's Mount Carmel still believes in rock 'n' roll -- you know, the real stuff with charging guitars and drums meant to stir the loins before the brain cells... And I mean that in a good way.

Like the blues, traditional rock ‘n’ roll remains a great musical building block and form. It’ll never be out of date. Mount Carmel shows their devotion to the crunchy riff on “Back on It”, a smokin’ tune from their upcoming album, Get Pure. Mount Carmel bass player Pat Reed tells us about “Back on It”: “The song was built off of the riff. A simple driving riff. The vocals aren’t very complex either. About the repeated monotony of trying to be a man. The song is based off of feeling. Theres a looseness to it. We try to run away from any intellectual complexities that could contribute to a song becoming too narcissistic.”

Mount Carmel’s Get Pure will be released on CD, digital formats and limited edition vinyl on March 25th via Alive Naturalsound Records.

// Notes from the Road

"The Shape of Water comes off as uninformed political correctness, which is more detrimental to its cause than it is progressive.
