Free Jazz Site Destination

Out Is Shutting Down

by John Garratt

25 February 2014

The MP-Free jazz website is grinding to a halt.

For quite a while, Destination: Out was a great one-stop website for one’s avant-garde/free-jazz edification and downloading. They uploaded all kinds of rare, out-of-print stuff for the temporary taking. They even opened a download store, believeing that they shouldn’t be the only ones with access to these weird and wonderful recordings featuring Peter Brötzmann, Hans Reichel, Sam Rivers, the Schlippenbach Trio and many more.

But now Destination: Out is shutting down. The website will be archived and the store will remain open for business. But there will be no new lectures/debates/guest posts regarding fringe jazz. The reason for the site’s end is stated right on the front page: “Truthfully, we simply don’t have enough time to do it justice. We’ve struggled to keep the site active, but increasingly our energies have been pulled elsewhere.”

They’ve participated in many giveaways, and they want to do one more as a sendoff. This time it’s the 12-CD FMP box set. Details on the contest are forthcoming.
