The Black Keys - "Fever" (stream)

by Scott Recker

26 March 2014

The Black Keys scale back on their roots and once again change gears with a new single.

The Black Keys have made a career out of finding the cracks between rock music’s past and present, living in that middle ground and refusing to choose a side by pairing throwback riffs and howls with the stranglehold of pop’s modern sensibilities. And nothing has changed with their new single “Fever”, the first release off their forthcoming May 13 LP, Turn Blue, except the way they do it. This time, more than two years since we’ve heard from them, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney drive even further from the barebones, gritty blues-rock that skyrocketed them from Akron and dive into a pool of dense, piercing psychedelia. Danger Mouse is once again co-producing, so expect a few twists and turns that may or may not piss you off, depending on your thoughts about their music becoming more easily digestible. The track list for Turn Blue is below.

"Nils Pihl calls it, "Newtonian engagement", that is, when "an engaged player will remain engaged until acted upon by an outside force". That's "progress".
