“The Girls Are Here,” the newest single by the New York songwriting duo Beautiful Small Machines, brings one classic group to mind immediately from the outset: The Beach Boys. With this track, the duo of Bree Sharp and Don DiLego bring to mind all the summertime fun associated with that quintessential pop act, all the while adding their own unique dose of fun to the equation. However, despite the beachfront environs the song evokes, the initial inspiration for the song comes from the realm of late-night partying out in the city.
Sharp says of this inspiration, “‘The Girls Are Here’” is about that ridiculous feeling of invincibility, of getting dressed for a night out like you’re getting ready to go into battle. When I was younger, I’d put on boots and lip gloss and felt pretty certain I could choose anyone in the bar I wanted to make out with, beat up anyone who gave me trouble, and fly home high on whiskey and sex. Hell, I guess I still feel that way sometimes, especially if I put the right music on while I’m dressing. I hope this song makes someone else feel that way too—like they can take the city by storm and lay it all to waste. What else is there to do on the weekend?”
The DJ Stayed Home, the duo’s newest studio effort, is out on July 8th.
