Arum Rae - "Waving Wild" (audio) (Premiere)

by Brice Ezell

3 October 2014

Brooklyn-based musician Arum Rae's latest tune, "Waving Wild", melds together a Spoon-esque driving rhythm with Rae's captivating vocals.

Arum Rae (formerly known as White Dress) is set to release her new EP, entitled Waving Wild, following a year of waiting for its release while she was being courted by a major label. Recorded at Public Hi-Fi in Austin (the studio of Spoon drummer Jim Eno) and remixed/mastered by John Congleton (notable for his recent production credit on Swans’ To Be Kind), Waving Wild EP is a long-awaited solo release from an artist who has made a significant splash as a collaborator. Most memorably, she collaborated with John Paul White (of the Civil Wars fame) in writing “If I Didn’t Know Better”, the season one theme song for the smash hit program Nashville.

The title track to Waving Wild EP, which you can stream below, is an intriguing number, in which a Spoon-esque, insistent rhythm form a background. Rae’s powerful vocals. That Rae has been called “a modern day siren” is no exaggeration.

Rae prefers to keep things interpretive with her music, as evidenced by what she told PopMatters about “Waving Wild”: ““Reverie with wings… what we made last night and the thrill of what we could be.”

Waving Wild EP, which is self-released, is out on November 4th.
