Hill Country Revue: Make a Move

Now that Luther Dickinson is a full-fledged member of the Black Crowes, brother Cody has been freed up from his duties banging drums for the North Mississippi All-Stars to concentrate on his own new act. Dubbed the Hill Country Review and rounded out by fellow North Mississippi All-Star Chris Chew on bass, drummer Ed “Hot” Cleveland, blues harpist Daniel Coburn, and guitarist Kirk Smithhart, the band creates some of the finest greasy, sleazy Southern blooze rock this side of the Allman Brothers’ annual Beacon Theatre residency on its studio debut, Make a Move. While Fat Possum Records continues to abandon its history by signing indie rock bands like Wavves, the Hill Country Revue keeps the spirits of such juke-joint legends as R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough alive across these 10 impressive songs, most of which were actually written by R.L.’s son Garry, who also plays guitar on a few cuts alongside his brother Duwayne. Any fan of old-school Southern rock should seek this out immediately.
