Gozalo! Vol. 3

The Vampisoul label continues its excellent series chronicling the evolution of tropical music from 1960s Peru with Gozalo! Vol. 3. While other aspects of Latino music back then were far more visible in the wake of such popular acts as Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria and Desi Arnaz (kidding, sort of), the boogaloo-heavy Peruvian scene was instrumental in the evolution of future Spanish music, particularly the development of salsa, which would explode in the early 1970s. Salsa’s roots can clearly be heard across this 28-track collection on songs by such acts as Mario Allison, Silvestre Montez, Tito Chicoma, and Willie Marambio and the hip-shaking, block-party-ready vibes they created with their joyous compositions. Excellently compiled by Peruvian tastemaker Rafael Hurtado de Mendoza, Gozalo Vol. 3 is essential listening for any serious fan of Latino roots music.
