The William Blakes: Wayne Coyne

the William Blakes
Last Gang/Speed of Sound

While this Danish quartet might have already released its sophomore album, Dear Unknown Friend in its native land, the William Blakes remain relatively unknown around these parts. Although the band’s Tears for Fears-meets-the Stone Roses vibe might be just a little late to ride the ’80s revival wave, the band certainly gives it a go. Its sound is nice for a while, but by the title track, the release just reminds us that grandeur has to be earned. Suffice it to say, the William Blakes, though pleasant, do not offer us a personality like Bono or Ian Brown, for that matter. The band cannot even offer us someone on Chris Martin’s scale. The William Blakes are a perfectly fine Euro-pop band who got mixed up in more production than a Lady Gaga video. Keep it simple, boys, and perhaps we’ll see (and hear) you in the new year.
