Dog Is Blue

Tortoise

(Facekick; US: 17 May 2011; UK: 17 May 2011 (Import))

This Toronto, Ontario duo calls to mind a meeting of a young Greg Brown (Paul Watson) and an earthbound angel (Laura Heaney). The duo gets up to good old-fashioned silliness via the opening “Dusty Bones”, the title song, and the brilliantly bent “Stan & Georgie”, each one chock full of warmth, humor, and an uncommonly affable levity. It’s refreshing to hear a record almost entirely free of irony and informed by a childlike curiosity that reminds us how pleasant and important the human imagination can be. Sit back, enjoy, and smile all the day long, for Dog Is Blue is as unpretentious as they come.
