No One Knows What Happens Next

(Discrete Pageantry)
US: 22 May 2012

Hallelujah the Hills have returned, hitting their hard moments well, but this time not quite succeeding at their more reflective cuts. No One Knows What Happens Next shows the band’s strengths. The band carefully constructed “People Breathe Into Other People”, without ever sounding careful. The tension builds throughout the song, and when it finally realizes, it’s in a burst of noise, which provides as much redirection as it does release. Hallelujah the Hills pulls off the mid-tempo rocker with “The Game Changes Me”, crafting a nice chorus and keeping the energy up. The album’s middle, highlighted by the brief title track, though, doesn’t sustain that sort of energy. Some of these songs lose weight and intrigue. The highs—like opener “Get Me in a Room” with its simple yet effective bass part or well-built “Call off Your Horses” – are memorable, but the album’s unevenness keeps it from being as good as it could be.
