Screen Door Porch: The Fate and the Fruit

Hazy nights fueled by whiskey, bonfires, smoke, and smokes. Back Door Porch quietly evokes all this and more on their fantastic sophomore effort, The Fate and the Fruit. Sedar Rose and Aaron Davis’ connection is electric and sustains throughout this entire release, occasionally bringing to mind the pairing of Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch, if it were re-imagined by Ryan Adams and Neko Case. While The Fate and the Fruit progresses, however, it does start to reveal cracks. Fortunately, the band’s smart enough to throw their hardest-charging tracks whenever the record feels like it’s about to falter. The Fate and the Fruit‘s only fatal flaw is its length. At a dozen mostly glacially paced tracks, it can be a bit much to make your way through in one setting, but when stunners like “Easy Chair” get thrown in, that task is made a whole lot easier.
