There have been many bands accused of owing too much to their influences. One of the bands that seem to come up the most when someone’s being accused of being too derivative is Joy Division. While one could make the Joy Division case against Black Swan Runners, it’d be (as it often is) an over-generalization. There’s elements of shoegaze and late 1980s/early ‘90s SST Records. Black Swan Runners also have their own take on things and while they still blend in a little too comfortably with other bands mining similar influences, there’s the potential for them to expand on their unique twists and create something special. An Aside is a fairly energetic record, even in its admirable restraint. The songs never veer into territory that’s too dull and the production from Alex Newport is as strong as it’s ever been. Keep an eye out for these guys, they could have big things ahead of them if they can figure themselves out.
