5 Jun 2015: Randall's Island New York
The first day of the 2015 Governors Ball hit hard with strong performance from The Decemberists, Florence and the Machine and My Morning Jacket. I did make a poor scheduling decision however. MØ was a bit underwhelming in the Gotham Tent though. When I went over to the Big Apple Stage, I was impressed by how much of a blast Rudimental were having. It was probably just as much fun as people had during fellow UK-artist Charli XCX’s set but unfortunately, I hadn’t arrived in time to see most of it.
Otherwise, everything else had me on a high. I was singing along to every Decemberists song for the second time this year, as I still believe their newest album What a Terrible World.. is one of 2015’s best. Florence was dancing all across the stage, noting that it was the first time performing standing since she hurt her foot. Her live set was outstanding, drawing upon her newest release, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, though unfortunately she didn’t play my favorite from it, “Third Eye”. My Morning Jacket also had a strong release this year with The Waterfall but I haven’t given it as much time as releases from those other two. Their set was an impressive show and included several older favorites like “Wordless Chorus” and “Evil Urges”. The other major rocker I got to see, St. Vincent was as impressive as always having seen her twice last year.
Stay tuned for photos and recaps of the second and third days of Governors Ball and also check out our separate coverage of “Weird Al”, which was so awesome it merited a separate piece.
