Ghostly Swim

(Ghostly International; US: 27 Jan 2009; UK: 27 Jan 2009)

Joining the likes of Stones Throw and Def Jux, the Michigan based Ghostly International has taken the opportunity to make an [adult swim] compilation. Since none of the tracks selected by label boss Sam Valenti IV mention the monolithic adult cartoon network, this is obviously just a flimsy excuse to make a G.I. mixtape. However, any excuse to make a G.I. mixtape is good enough for me. Plus, it was originally available for a free download early on in 2008, almost a year before this physical version was pressed, so it’s not like money was the only motivating factor.

Whatever they’re charging is worth it too, if only to see what Sam and his pals have been up to. Righteous indie-electronic hybrids from the likes of School Of Seven Bells, Tycho, Aeroc, The Reflecting Skin, The Chap, and Matthew Dear will prove to even the most jaded acoustic lover the vibrancy, passion, and musicianship of modern electronic sound, and all of its rich variations. Without a doubt, Ghostly Swim displays one of the finest indie labels in the world at the very top of its game.

Author of blurbs, curator of playlists, and booker of shows, Alan Ranta has been plugging away at that music writing and programming thing since 2004. His brutally honest critical opinion has appeared in such publications as Exclaim!, CBC Music, PopMatters and Tiny Mix Tapes, and has been enlisted to help judge the Polaris Music Prize, Pazz & Jop, and Juno Awards. Based in East Van, he graduated with a BFA in music from Simon Fraser University in 2012. He's also a social media plague, cat whisperer, socio-political haranguer, Canucks fan, and one of the last remaining cowboys.
