Jason Dunne

Of Epic Proportion

(Sunrise Recordings)

DJ mixes are everywhere these days. Since the arrival of the Sahsa and Digweed mixes and the Global Underground series, every DJ and label feels compelled to get some product out. They generally amount to various artist compilations that happen to be strung together in a continuous mix. And in order to help boost sales, you will find one or more of the following on any given trance mix: BT, Paul van Dyke, Moby, Sasha, and/or Tim Maas. Mix CDs have been a boon to the producers who get royalties for every placement. This is good for them, and sometimes it’s good for the DJs and labels that put out these mixes. Sometimes the mixes come out fairly decent.

Jason Dunne’s Of Epic Proportion has epic tracks from four of these staples (if you count remixing), but it also includes lesser known producers such as Gouryella and Jez & Choople, plus SAF and Dunne himself from Sunrise Recordings (is it cynical to think that label self-promotion is at least part of this mix’s raison d’être?). For the most part, though it’s definitely “got a beat and you can dance to it”, this is more a set to listen to in the living room than play out on a dance floor. Which doesn’t make it bad, just a different setting. Dunne also does make some effort to avoid the obvious choices from the well known producers included here. BT is here, but it’s “The Hip-Hop Phenomenon”, not yet another mix of “Dreaming” or “Godspeed.” The Sasha track is “Rabbitweed” rather than “Xpander”. Standout tracks on this set are Jaz & Choople’s “Yim (Qattara Mix)”, Art of Trance’s “Mafagascar”, and Tilt’s “Invisible”.

Of Epic Proportion is a good mix with good flow, representative of what Dunne was playing last Summer in South Forida and on his Internet radio show at www.trancedomain.com. He has been a DJ for several years (as well as sound snginer and studio technician), so it could be his time to break out.
