Jerry Castle’s roots were first sewn within his hometown of Abingdon, a little Appalachian establishment this side of Virginia, though he has since established himself as one of the thousands of rising artists finding residence in Nashville. His latest release, Not So Soft Landing… does a good job of establishing these two facts about the affable artist right away with opening track and lead single, “Ride”, which appropriately sees Castle’s gritty tenor croon, “It’s time to start the ride,” a good number of times throughout the song’s fusion of heartland country and psychedelic rock influences.

The production of the record is at once earthy and ethereal, an echo laid over the collection of tracks like a familiar friend ripped straight out of the ‘80s rock scene. While that production choice alone will prove to be either charming or dated by individual audience perception, the songwriting is sound and Castle himself proves authentic enough to be the only one to steer his tracks forward.
