Miss Fortune

by Scott Hudson

Fans of Jason Falkner, Jellyfish, Gin Blossoms, the Wallflowers and the Tories will be instantly attracted to the potent power pop melodies that reside on Miss Fortune’s self-titled debut release. Led by the excellent hook-laden songwriting of guitarist Jay Barclay and the ultra-expressive, Bono-esque vocals of Ryan Link, this Boston quartet made up primarily of former Berkley College of Music students succeed in creating simplistic yet tightly-woven musical moments that are both impressive and endearing.

Miss Fortune boasts 10 perfectly seamless tracks that aim to ensnare, and from the get-go does just that with its guitar-charged opener, “Disappear”. But this is only a foreshadowing of the great tunes that follow. Wonderful pop-monsters like “If You Died” and “Before I Go” are musically brilliant and are richly complemented by the vocal harmonies of Link and Barclay, who has a warm Tommy Shaw (Styx) quality about his voice. Then there is the trippy “Day Gets Brighter” that treads the same water as Jason Falkner’s Can You Still Feel gem, “Eloquence”. Miss Fortune also shows that they’re equally adept at pulling off a strong lighter-waving anthem like “Antenna”, as well as heartfelt ballads such as “Hello Love” and its acoustic-rock cousin, “Peek”. Without a doubt, the disc’s finest moment comes courtesy of “Art Type”. This driving rocker gives each musician ample opportunity to shine, especially the rhythm section. Drummer Chris Hobbick’s propulsive 4/4 patterns blaze a wide trail for Josh Hindmarsh’s percolating bass lines and Barclay’s bright guitar thrash. Absolutely brilliant!
