Old Man Luedecke

Proof of Love

(Black Hen; US: 18 Mar 2008; UK: 14 Apr 2008)

Old Man Luedecke (who’s given name is Chris) is a Canadian banjo player who has taken Americana folk music north of the border to show us how it’s done. With all that wide open land up there, it makes sense that a Canuck would take so well to rural sounds. The style he performs might be most commonly associated with the hills of Eastern America, but the plink-plonking twangs of his four-string tenor banjo and his even voice seem especially resonant when imagined against the hard tundra and endless expanses of the Nova Scotia countryside Luedecke calls home. On his sophomore album, Proof of Love, he and his minimal backing band pick and strum their way through 11 warm-yet-moody and keenly observed original tunes, plus two traditional numbers that blend in seamlessly with Luedecke’s timeless sensibilities.

Michael Keefe is a freelance music journalist, an independent bookstore publicist, and a singer/guitarist/songwriter in a band. Raised on a record collection of The Beatles, Coltrane, Mozart, and Ravi Shankar, Michael has been a slave to music his whole life. At age 16, he got a drum set and a job at a record store, and he's been playing and peddling music ever since. Today, he lives in Oregon with his wife (also a writer, but not about music), two cats, and a whole lot of instruments and CDs.

Tender Is the Night is the relatively glossy, varnished sound of a man unafraid of playing music that hasn’t been largely heard in 60 or 70 years in its original incarnation, and being relatively faithful and authentic to it despite that sheen in the recording quality.

Luedecke is a masterful songwriter with an ability to convey experience way beyond his years. On these 11 songs his voice and banjo combine beautifully with the other instruments and harmony vocals.
