To be completely honest, I’m not quite sure what to make of What I Want from You Is Sweet. On one hand, Orion Rigel Dommisse’s medieval-inspired folk music (most easily compared to Joanna Newsom’s) can be a little dry, and her squeaky voice can make her lyrics hard to understand. But once you’ve given the album a few listens, and you do start to decipher them, you begin to see the wonderfully dark and twisted fairy tale world Dommisse has constructed. “When you die I’ll rearrange your bones / Into the shape of an animal you love”, she sings in “A Faceless Death”. “I will cover your bones with fur / And construct wings from the bones of dead birds”. So, in the end, how much you get out of her debut will probably be a direct result of how much patience you can muster.
