The final CD in a trilogy of DJ mixes by one of Cologne’s premier techno producers, Please Please Please skirts the invisible boundaries of electronic music as it builds from a base of quiet, minimal tracks to the powerful, acid-laced songs that comprise much of the German club scene. A long-time member of the Kompakt family and compatriot of Michael Mayer, Thomas compiled the mix as a moody narrative, one that explores the evolution of his sound. He begins with a calm voiceover record, a track that establishes the aura of the mix by repeatedly asking “Was ist Zuviel Zeit?” (What is too much time?). Like a night at a club, the CD proceeds through haunting blips and bloops before tackling more complex tracks by historical favorites Johannes Heil, Ricardo Villalobos, and The Kooky Scientist. Thomas eases listeners into these faster-paced, more experimental tracks before climaxing with the favorite deep house song, “Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me”, and concluding with a daring ode to Stevie Nicks. The result is a modest showcase of minimal techno that slows the club pace and offers a unique, relaxing dance sound.
