I have to give this compilation some credit just for the sake of what it is. You might ask what exactly the NRG files are, and I have an answer.
NU NRG is yet another style of rave music, like Trance or Happy Hardcore. I must admit, there seem to be more of these styles than any non-raver can keep track of these days. No, its not really that different from all the other types, but there are some slight idyosyncrasies that, when compounded and examined comparatively, make for a rewarding listening experience.
The NRG Files is one of the first compilations distributed as of yet that is devoted entirely to this new style of dance music. Labels such as Public House, Mohawk, and Cannon Records are currently the most involved with the movement and are currently experiencing success in moving NU NRG into the U.S. underground scene from Europe, where this music has its roots.
So what is it? To me, upon a first listen, I decided that if record labels were to have actual wars with music, NU NRG would be a biological weapon. This music is devastating because of what seem to be roots grounded in rock. Whereas most hardcore dance music is comprised mostly of heavy drum ‘n’ bass that is periodically interrupted by some chick singing like a Japanese pop star, NU NRG concerns itself with traditional rock effects, like wah and distortion. Its still dance music, just a little less silly. Actually, that may not be true; Beavis and Butthead samples frequently pop up out of nowhere, for some odd reason. This, however, only adds to the traditional rock orientation.
The current plan for this interesting new album is to promote it like mad. Those of you in the rave community who haven’t heard about it before reading this will probably become pretty familiar with it in the upcoming months. As always, www.majesticrecordings.com is the place for more info. Its worth checking out.
