With stars like Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, and John Malkovich as the hero, love interest, and villain, respectfully, Jonah Hex would seem to be well on its way to summer blockbuster glory. Sadly, much like the ruthless American West traversed by Hex himself, all is not well for the film, which is set for a June 18 premiere. According to New York Magazine’s Vulture blog, the mega-budget, supernatural Western has yet to release a trailer for the film. Although Warner Bros. plans to unveil the movie’s trailer with the upcoming A Nightmare on Elm Street, which arrives in theaters April 30, Jonah Hex has endured a series of production setbacks and troublesome publicity.

Originally, Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (Crank) were set to direct Jonah Hex, but dropped out in November 2008. It didn’t help that Brolin described the script as “awful”, in an interview posted on the MTV Movie Blog. Warner Bros. also brought in Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend) to serve as a consultant during the film’s reshoots.

These omens do not bode well for Jonah Hex. Movie fans, especially those loyal to the comic book genre, are now more than ever able to closely follow a film’s production, courtesy of the world wide web. Yet despite the setbacks, maybe the tired saying that there’s no such thing as bad publicity holds true. Artistic masterpiece or not, with Jonah Hex co-starring Megan Fox and featuring some (hopefully) good action sequences, the film should at least break even.
